Cost Conscious: Tariffs Are Putting A Bummer On Summer

Feeling the heat of new tariffs, Americans are sweating the soaring costs of summer essentials. With outdoor furniture prices climbing by 3% to 5%, grills set to jump 10% to 20%, and electronics and summer clothing facing a high premium, backyard cookouts and cannonballs will soon become more expensive.

American families are already struggling to balance their budgets, but tariffs could cost them nearly $5,000 more per year. Read more about how tariffs are putting a bummer on Americans’ fun in the sun.

SEARING PRICES

For Americans at the grill, hamburgers and steaks just got more expensive. With a 25% tariff on imported beef from Canada and Mexico, costs are expected to rise in grocery stores and butcher shops across the country.1

  • General food prices are expected to rise 2.8% overall, including a 4% increase on the cost of fresh produce. 2

Grills are getting more expensive too. Rising steel costs are forcing Lynx, a maker of premium outdoor grills and kitchen goods, to increase prices on its products by 3% to 12% starting August 1.3

  • A Lynx Professional 27-inch propane grill that now sells for about $3,000 could cost an additional $350 more.4

Signs at several Cincinnati, Ohio Ace Hardware stores told shoppers to buy their Weber grills now since “Starting May 1, Weber grills will see a 10 to 20% price increase.” 5

BACKYARD BLUES

More than half of the furniture that American consumers purchase is imported, with China and Vietnam as the largest exporters to the United States.6

  • Outdoor furniture manufacturers with factories outside the United States have already announced price increases, with average price hikes ranging between 3% and 5%.7

The costs of patio furniture, outdoor speakers and lawnmowers are expected to skyrocket as China supplies a vast majority of these goods.

  • A lawnmower that costs $1,000 pre-tariff could now exceed $2,400.8
