Cost Conscious: Steel & Aluminum Tariffs Will Raise Prices For Everything From Cars To Cans

The White House issued an executive order imposing new tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports. This action reinstated a 25% tariff on steel for all countries and elevated tariffs to 25% on aluminum. Tariffs on these metals will have a far-reaching impact on the price of many goods Americans use every day, as the United States imports one-quarter of its steel and half of its aluminum from foreign countries.

Here’s what experts say will get more expensive under these new steel and aluminum tariffs:

AUTOMOBILES:
The cost of a car could increase to as much as $12,000. 1

BARBECUE GRILLS AND COOKERS:
The U.S. imported $3.6 billion worth of products in 2023. The price of a grill could increase by 25%. 2

PATIO FURNITURE:
Steel-reinforced outdoor furniture is expected to face significant price hikes. 3

HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES:
Refrigerators, stoves and washing machines could increase in cost by 5-10%. 4

CANNED FOODS AND DRINKS:
Both steel and aluminum are used to manufacture cans, so a 25% tariff on these materials could make canned goods more expensive. 5
