Amidst Recent Trade Actions By The Trump Administration, U.S. Senators Unveil Bipartisan Trade Review Act
Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) have introduced the bipartisan Trade Review Act, aiming to reassert congressional authority over trade policy in response to President Donald Trump’s latest push for reciprocal and retaliatory tariffs that are hitting household goods.
Grassley’s leadership in this effort – bolstered by his role as chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, membership in the Committee on Finance, and service as Senate President Pro Tempore – signals mounting Republican concern over the President’s escalating trade actions that are hitting every American family in the pocketbook.
Unveiled Thursday, alongside Senator Cantwell, the bill seeks to rein in the president’s unilateral power to impose tariffs. It would require the White House to notify Congress within 48 hours of any new tariff and secure congressional approval within 60 days for it to remain in effect. Furthermore, the legislation grants Congress the authority to repeal tariffs at any time, reinforcing its oversight on trade policy.
In his statement to the press, Senator Grassley said, “For too long, Congress has delegated its clear authority to regulate interstate and foreign commerce to the executive branch. Building on my previous efforts as Finance Committee Chairman, I’m joining Senator Cantwell to introduce the bipartisan Trade Review Act of 2025 to reassert Congress’ constitutional role and ensure Congress has a voice in trade policy.”
