Cost Conscious: Digging Into Tariffs: The Impact On Your Spring and Summer Gardens

For millions of Americans, warm weather and sunshine mean more time in their yards and working on their gardens. For those looking to plant new flower beds, tackle those pesky weeds or simply mow their lawn, yard work now faces extra costs from tariffs.

The National Gardening Survey reports that more than 80% of American households engage in gardening, increasing in popularity over the last several years. In 2024, the gardening tools market was worth a staggering $93.2 billion.

New tariffs have increased the costs of most gardening and landscaping equipment that families rely upon to keep their property looking its best. Some households looking to avoid rising tariff prices at the grocery store have even resorted to planting fruits and vegetables in their own backyards. The problem? What you may be saving at the grocery store, you may be spending at the garden and hardware store.

PLANTS AND FLOWERS

80% of all cut flowers sold in the United States, mostly from South America.1

Many vendors and local plant and flower shops have announced tariff related price increases, costing customers as much as 10% more.2

LAWN MOWERS, BLOWERS, TRUMMERS AND CHAINSAWS

Most lawn equipment, such as mowers, blowers, trimmers and chainsaws, are manufactured in China, which currently faces a 145% tariff.3

A lawn mower that costs $1,000 could exceed $2,400 after tariff markups.4

FERTILIZER

Most fertilizers and agrochemicals are imported from China and rely on raw materials sourced there. Tariffs could increase their cost by 20 to 40%.5

GARDEN AND OUTDOOR TOOLS

Popular outdoor tool and gardening brands, such as Stanley Black & Decker, have announced considerable price hikes to most products, necessitated by new tariffs.6

Other companies that manufacture metal parts and tools, such as Lincoln Electric and Illinois Tool Works, have also announced plans to pass on tariff costs to consumers.7
