Americans Overwhelmingly Support Tax Cuts, Now Congress Must Make the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act Tax Cuts Permanent
Most Americans believe they pay too much in taxes. So it should come as no surprise that most Americans overwhelmingly support permanent tax cuts.
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) has supported Americans across the United States, resulting in 65% of Americans paying less taxes than in prior years. In fact, 82% of middle-class households received a tax cut, saving roughly $1,000 per household and putting that money back in their pockets.
The Status of Tax Reform
These tax cuts are on the chopping block – and if Congress fails to act, millions of families and small businesses could face the largest tax hike in American history as tariffs raise prices on everyday goods, from groceries to children’s toys.
In discussing the TCJA’s successes, Republican Study Committee Chairman August Pfluger said, “[If] these tax cuts expire, Americans will be crushed by the largest tax hike in history – a 22% increase hitting 40 million families and 26 million small businesses.”
In the 2024 election, voters sent a powerful message. We wanted leaders who promised to lower prices, strengthen the economy and return fiscal power to the people. Failing to preserve the TCJA, and in turn–raising taxes, would be completely counter to that mandate.
The economy is already in a fragile state. Recession fears loom, inflation pressures remain and protectionist trade policies that threaten to raise prices on everyday household goods have only added more strain on American households. A massive tax increase on top of that is not just poor timing – it’s economic hardship.
If Congress does not act, this scenario will become a reality. Every American will feel the pain – at the grocery store, at the gas pump and in their paycheck. This isn’t hypothetical. It’s a very real threat to the livelihoods of millions of American families.
We Cannot Afford To Go Backward
After enduring the COVID-19 pandemic, the worst inflation in 50 years and record-low consumer sentiment in 2025 due to turbulent trade policy, Americans deserve certainty, stability and financial security. Making the TCJA tax cuts permanent is one of the most direct and immediate ways Congress can deliver on its promise.
This is not a partisan issue – it’s a kitchen-table issue. It’s about keeping money in the hands of working families and small businesses, protecting opportunity and preserving the American dream.
The path forward is clear. Congress must act now. Americans overwhelmingly support tax relief, and they’ve felt the benefits. Now, it’s time to lock them in.
